Server Editions
Every server that runs Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 requires a Server License. Three Server Editions are available for Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0:

Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Workgroup Server
- Offers the same rich feature set as Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Server.
- Includes and supports a maximum of 5 named User licenses.
- Licensed as a Specialty Server.
- For greater than 5 User support, Customers may purchase a Step-Up to Microsoft
- Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Server.
- Runs on Windows 2000 Server; Windows Server 2003; Windows Small Business Server 2003
Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Professional Server
- Offers a rich feature set, and supports single tenant deployment.
- Users are only limited by Server capacity, there is no licensing limit on the number of users
Licensed under the Server/CAL licensing model
- Users may be added by purchasing Microsoft Dynamics CRM CALs, as outlined below.
- For multi-tenancy support, Customers may purchase a Step-Up to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 Enterprise Server.
- Runs on Windows 2000 Server; Windows Server 2003; Windows Small Business Server 2003

On-Demand SPLA

For each edition of CRM Live there are varying commitment levels, storage offerings and synchronization capabilities. With the introduction of CRM Live in March of 2008, the offerings planned are as follows:
- Microsoft Dynamics CRM Live Professional Edition 5 Gigabytes of storage, a 12 month commitment, and no offline Synchronization
- Microsoft Dynamics CRM Live Professional Edition 5 Gigabytes of storage, a 24 month commitment, and no offline Synchronization
- Microsoft Dynamics CRM Live Professional Plus Edition 20 Gigabytes of storage, a 12 month commitment, and offline Synchronization

Workflows

In earlier versions of Microsoft Dynamics CRM, creating workflows was limited to users who had been granted permission to access the server that was running Microsoft Dynamics CRM. Workflow creation is now available to all users of the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web client. Additionally, administrative users can now monitor individual workflow jobs in the new System Jobs area of the Web client.

System jobs are processes that run in the background, such as workflow jobs and bulk import. When a system job is started, the person starting the job can select who should be notified by e-mail when the job completes.

The new Web-based workflow system is fully integrated into the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web client and replaces the server-based Workflow Manager tool. Based on Windows Workflow Foundation, the new Microsoft Dynamics CRM workflow system also supports a broad range of activities created outside the Web client using development tools such as Microsoft Visual Studio®.

The CRM 4.0 Client for Microsoft Outlook

The E-mail Router is no longer required to send and receive e-mail messages.
Setup and configuration are now separate programs.
There is an updated look using the Office user interface components, such as the Ribbon, which replaces the traditional menu and toolbar.

Deployment Manager

To create a new organization by using Deployment Manager, the user must be a member of the PrivUserGroup Active Directory security group. This group is created during Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server Setup.
Although a user can belong to multiple organizations, both Microsoft Dynamics CRM clients for Outlook and the Web client can only bind to the default organization. The default organization is the organization in which the user was first created.
User accounts are no longer created and managed in Deployment Manager. These tasks are now performed the Settings area of the Microsoft Dynamics CRM Web application.
The Active Directory user account that was used to install the Microsoft Dynamics CRM “4” product is the only account that will have access to Deployment Manager at first.
The users must have the following privileges to access deployment Manager
- Local administrator on the server.
- System administrator role in Microsoft Dynamics CRM.
You can add, remove, enable, or disable organizations in Deployment Manager.

Single Server Deployment

An all-in-one or single server deployment of CRM 4.0 is only supported when it is installed on Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2. In a single server deployment, Windows Server 2003 functioning as a domain controller, Microsoft Dynamics CRM Server, SQL Server 2005, SQL Server Reporting Services, and optionally, Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 are all installed and running on the same computer.
Multiple Server Deployment
CRM 4.0 deployments that include multiple servers provide additional performance and scaling benefits. There are several multiple server configurations that can be deployed with Microsoft Dynamics CRM “4.” Below are examples of a two-server.
Two-Server (Team) Topology

The two-server deployment topology consists of the following configuration:

Computer 1: Running Windows Server 2003 or Windows 2000 Server as a functioning domain controller. If the computer is running Windows Server 2003, it may also run Microsoft Exchange 2003.

Computer 2: Running Windows Server 2003, SQL Server 2005, SQL 2005 Reporting Services, and CRM 4.0 server.
